CONVENTIONAL ROAD BITUMEN

  • The 35/50 penetration grade bitumen is a standard grade typically used in regions with relatively warm climatic conditions. Penetration grade 35/50 has a penetration value ranging between 35 and 50 (inclusive) and is primarily utilised in the production of hot mix asphalt for base layers and wearing courses.

Nota de stilou 35/50 nu este una dintre clasele tipice utilizate în sectorul construcțiilor de drumuri din Balcani și, prin urmare, disponibilitatea poate fi supusă unor factori sezonieri.

  • Penetration grade 50/70 bitumen is a standard grade most commonly used in road construction, paving applications, and certain industrial uses.

Penetration grade bitumens are defined by penetration and softening point tests, with classification based solely on the penetration range. For instance, bitumen 50/70 has a penetration value between 50 and 70 (inclusive) and a softening point typically ranging from 46°C to 54°C.

Penetration grade 50/70 is consistently available and can be reliably delivered to the end user.

  • Penetration grade 70/100 bitumen is a standard paving grade typically used in road construction and in the production of asphalt mixes with enhanced properties, including polymer-modified bitumen (PMB).

Penetration grade bitumens are defined by penetration and softening point tests, with classification based solely on the penetration range. For example, bitumen 70/100 has a penetration value between 70 and 100 (inclusive) and a softening point generally ranging from 43°C to 51°C.

SPECIAL BITUMENS

  • Atlantipol SP is a premium-grade polymer-modified bitumen, engineered to meet the most demanding requirements of European paving projects. It can be incorporated into a wide range of asphalt mixtures to enhance key performance characteristics.

The improved performance properties of asphalt include:

    • Increased resistance to permanent deformation (rutting), owing to enhanced viscosity and elasticity

    • Superior resistance to cracking and raveling, due to improved flexibility, allowing the asphalt to better absorb mechanical and thermal stresses

    • Enhanced adhesion between bitumen and aggregates, resulting from a greater affinity of the modified binder

    • Improved performance at lower temperatures, thanks to maintained flexibility across a broad temperature range

These characteristics result in superior road performance, reduced maintenance frequency, and an overall extension of pavement service life.

The use of Atlantipol SP is particularly recommended in areas subjected to extremely high loads, such as racetracks, container terminals, airport runways, bus lanes, and heavily trafficked industrial roads.

This premium polymer-modified bitumen is storage-stable and does not require special handling conditions. However, asphalt mixing and application temperatures are generally higher than those associated with standard bitumen grades.

Accordingly, Atlantipol SP is ideally suited for specialised infrastructure projects, including bridges, airports, Formula 1 circuits, and high-traffic roadways.

Atlantipol SP is available in multiple variants, covering the most common specifications—45-80/65, 25-55/55, 25-55/75, and 60-90/50—in accordance with EN 14023

  • Atlantipol E is a polymer-modified bitumen formulated with a thermoplastic elastomer, which enhances the viscosity of the binder and, consequently, improves several key performance characteristics of asphalt.

    The resulting performance benefits include:

    • Increased resistance to permanent deformation (rutting)

    • Enhanced performance at elevated temperatures

    • Extended pavement service life compared to asphalt mixtures produced with standard bitumen

    • Improved resistance to the effects of fuel spills (such as oil, kerosene, etc.)

    • Superior adhesion between aggregate and bitumen, resulting in greater resistance to frictional forces exerted by vehicle tyres

Atlantipol E is particularly suited for applications where permanent deformation of the pavement is a critical concern. Its use contributes to increased durability, enhanced traffic safety, and reduced maintenance frequency and associated costs.

It may also be applied in binder courses beneath the surface layer, where it provides additional structural support to the overall pavement system.

Owing to its significantly increased viscosity, Atlantipol E is especially well suited for asphalt used in high-stress areas such as bus lanes.

  • Atlantipol Fueltech is a polymer-modified product designed to significantly enhance the resistance of asphalt to fuel and solvent spillages.

It can be successfully applied in all environments where exposure to fuels or solvents is likely, such as airport runways and taxiways, parking areas near fuel stations, storage depots for fuels and/or solvents, port areas prone to spills, and various industrial facilities.

In addition to its chemical resistance, Atlantipol Fueltech also improves the mechanical properties and overall durability of asphalt mixtures in which it is incorporated.

To demonstrate its superior solvent resistance, Atlantipol Fueltech has been tested within a standard dense asphalt concrete formulation. Core samples of this asphalt were exposed to kerosene, petrol, and diesel over a 24-hour period. The resulting weight loss serves as a key indicator of solvent resistance. Comparative results show that asphalt produced with conventional 50/70 bitumen exhibits significantly higher degradation than asphalt incorporating Atlantipol Fueltech.

The findings clearly indicate that Atlantipol Fueltech enhances solvent resistance across all types of petroleum fuels by at least a factor of nine. This translates into substantially increased durability in environments where fuel or solvent spillages occur frequently.

The particularly strong resistance to kerosene further highlights the product’s overall capability to withstand aggressive exposure to fuels such as diesel and petrol, as well as other industrial solvents.

  • Porous asphalt significantly reduces both noise and water spray on paved roads, thereby enhancing driving safety.

It is particularly recommended for ring roads surrounding urban areas, where it helps lower noise levels for nearby residents. Another key application is on motorways, where its excellent drainage capacity improves visibility in wet conditions and contributes to increased traffic safety.

The noise reduction and spray minimisation properties of porous asphalt are due to its highly open structure, with a void content of approximately 21%. This high porosity is achieved through a specific mix gradation. Porous asphalt is a so-called “gap-graded” asphalt, in which a certain aggregate fraction (typically the միջ-range fraction) is omitted, creating larger interconnected voids within the structure.

However, this open structure is inherently more sensitive to mechanical stresses exerted by vehicle tyres. The most effective way to minimise ravelling and aggregate loss is through the use of Atlantipol Porous—a specially polymer-modified bitumen designed for porous asphalt—which ensures superior adhesion between aggregates and binder.

  • When “aged” asphalt is recycled, the bitumen it contains has typically hardened over time, becoming more brittle and prone to cracking. In order to enable effective reuse, the aged binder must be softened and reactivated from the reclaimed aggregate. Atlantipol Recymix is a specially developed solution designed precisely for this purpose, allowing clients to offer the recycling of existing asphalt to road owners and authorities.

Naturally, the specific properties of the reclaimed asphalt play a critical role in this process, requiring Recymix to be tailored to the unique conditions of each project. Accordingly, we work in close collaboration with our clients to define and optimise the appropriate formulation for every individual application.

  • By utilising coloured bitumen with distinctive appearance and enhanced performance properties, the need to differentiate surfaces or harmonise with the surrounding environment can be successfully achieved. Our coloured bitumen is a specialised product which, when combined with suitable pigments, enables the production of coloured asphalt for a wide range of applications.

Coloured bitumen is particularly well suited for use in:

    • Pedestrian areas, parks, and commercial centres

    • Parking areas

    • Bicycle lanes

    • Bus lanes

    • Historic sites

    • Tunnels

  • he most common and widely recognised application of bitumen emulsions in Europe is as a tack coat or bonding layer between successive asphalt courses. Our bitumen emulsions are primarily used for this purpose, as well as for rapid repair works, such as crack sealing and surface patching.

We produce a comprehensive range of both cationic and anionic bitumen emulsions for the road construction and infrastructure sectors. Depending on the intended application, these emulsions are formulated to break either rapidly or more gradually.

    Bitumen emulsions offer numerous advantages:

    • Safe and easy application at ambient temperatures

    • Reduced energy consumption

    • No fume emissions during application

    • Efficient road repairs and overlays on existing pavements

The most commonly produced emulsions for paving applications include C40B5 (tack coat) and C55B4 (bonding layer between asphalt courses).

Customised solutions can also be developed for more complex road applications, such as overlays, surface dressings, and slurry seals.
